PURPOSE
To see that even a job as big as building Rome can be broken down so that it does not seem so large as to overwhelm to a point where people are so daunted they can’t even start or turn to negativity –“There’s no way we can do that.”
DESCRIPTION
Teams will be challenged to get from one point to another using teamwork and several pieces of paper.
PARTICIPANTS
6 or more in teams. See steps.
TIME 60 min.
SUPPLIES
Masking tape for start and finish lines, paper cut in 18-inch squares
Steps:
• Facilitator sets up activity. Put people in teams of six or eight. Give each team 18-inch
paper squares - the amount determined by the number participating on each team. If there are 8 people, then give 5 sheets of paper to that team; if six then 4 pieces of paper (in other words, one more sheet than half of the number of team members). Mark beginning and finish lines on the ground with tape. Control the length of time taken on the activity by limiting each race to 4 minutes and/or by making the distance shorter.
• Teams must use the sheets of paper they have to work their way from start to finish. All team members must go that route. No one may step directly on the floor, but must always have paper between foot and floor as they go. The first team across finish line wins.
Phase 1
• Hand all the sheets of paper for that team to one team member and ask the whole team to stand one behind the other, all behind the starting line.
• Begin immediately without any real time for discussion. Tell them they must maintain silence. Talking or putting foot directly on floor will result in the entire team returning to the starting line.
Challenging the team
• After one team crosses the finish line, process any learning.
