PURPOSE PARTICIPANTS
To cultivate behaviors that can help us be the kind of person we’d like to be.
DESCRIPTION
Participants identify their hero or idol and the behaviors that person practiced that made him or her who he or she is.
any number
TIME 15 minutes
SUPPLIES pens and paper
Steps:
• Ask the group:“What makes a person a hero or an idol?”Take a few answers.
• Then say, “The people we look up to were not born extraordinary. They work at being great. They study to have knowledge. They practice to perform well. They cultivate their lives so as to be open to growing. It takes a strong effort, persistence and commitment to get to a place of making amazing things happen.”
• Ask everyone to think of his or her own hero and to write his or her name down at the top of a piece of paper. Then say, “Now, what makes them great? What qualities do they possess? Then, how do they get that way? What do they do? If you want to be like your hero, those are the things you need to do. For example, if someone wants to be a great basketball player, he might look up to Michael Jordan. What does Michael Jordan do to be great? He keeps in shape by working out. He practices shooting baskets. He eats well, etc.” Give them 5 minutes to write down the answers to those questions.
• Finally, tell participants: “Hang on to this paper and make a plan to emulate the behaviors of your hero. Every once in a while, take out this paper at the end of the day and think about the ways you were able to do those things that day.”
