Speed Dating
PURPOSE
To get to know each other better and make a connection with people outside of our usual work/social circle by finding common bonds.
DESCRIPTION
People mingle with the group in an effort to quickly find things they have in common.
PARTICIPANTS 12-20
TIME 15 minutes
Steps:
• Everyone stands in an open space where it is easy to move around. Everybody picks a partner, someone they do not know well.
• Tell the group they have two or three minutes to find something in common with the other person. They should try asking each other questions like “Is there a
TV show you watch every week?”“What kind of music do you like?”“Do you like to cook?”“Do you belong to any organizations?” etc. While they are asking these questions they will be looking for common ground as well as learning about the other person.
• Once they find the common ground, they should spend the rest of the time conversing about it. After two or three minutes, the facilitator should loudly say, “Switch.” Everybody is to find a new partner.
• If there is time, switch until each person has gotten to meet with every other person. Or, limit it to five or so switches if you have a large group and ask people to focus on the folks they do not know as well.
