aiku
PURPOSE PARTICIPANTS To boil down culture change values Team
in a fun, inspiring and simple way.
DESCRIPTION Participants will write haiku poems about values.
TIME 10 minutes
SUPPLIES
flip chart and markers paper and pens
Steps:
• Tell the group that the big ideas and values of culture change can be hard to put into words and even a bit overwhelming. Start by asking for volunteers to offer culture change values. Write them on a flip chart for everyone to see. They should include: leadership, person-centered care, team, daily pleasures, etc.
• Explain to the group that a haiku is a poem that has three lines with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second and 5 in the third. Give this example:
Person-centered care It is the right thing to do We all deserve it
• Ask everyone to write their own haiku about one of the values listed earlier. Give them 5-7 minutes to do so. What is said in the poem will have a stronger and lasting impact because it is done so creatively and succinctly.
• Ask everyone to share their haikus with the group. Alternately, collect them and have them typed up and distributed.
• This is also a great activity to do with elders. Have staff pair up with elders and write a haiku about the elder. Again, type them up into a booklet and/or share them in a group setting.
