Anaogies,continued
Steps:
• Each group is to think of a different context than your normal working environment. It could be camping, a sport, making a meal, a sitcom, movie or book you are all familiar with, police work, a circus, etc...anything you can think of. Now, use that context to think about how to address your challenge. It can be literal tactics that could be used both in your situation and the hypothetical one (have lots of energy to launch the team). It can be metaphorical (reach for the stars). It can also be a general lesson learned from your hypothetical context (wonder what’s out there). Each team should write down its analogies and then bring the groups back together and share with the whole group.
• Alternatively, you could do the exercise with the whole group. The facilitator can present the issue and say to the group “What if we were to look at team-building as a space flight(or whatever analogy about an issue you’d like to make)? What are things that are true of space flight that would also be true of our situation? (Or, “How is an onion like problem solving?” etc.) The facilitator could give the first example to get things going. Ask for volunteers to answer and write their answers on a flipchart as you go.
