PARTICIPANTS Team
TIME 45 minutes
SUPPLIES
flip chart and markers, pens and paper
Steps:
• Ask participants to brainstorm obstacles to change and share them with the group – the facilitator listing them on a flip chart. In this exercise “change” can mean change in general, change in nursing home culture or a specific change such as moving to open breakfast.
• When you have a good-sized list, ask the group to look at each obstacle and rate it according to
the following scale:
1-rumored
2-imagined
3-easy to overcome
4-hard to overcome, but possible with time, effort and resources 5-nearly impossible to overcome
Look for group consensus on the rating and ask for reasons when there is difference of opinion about how an obstacle should be rated.
• Start the discussion by looking at the obstacles that were rated a 1 or 2. Ask, “How can we combat this misinformation to eliminate these obstacles?”
• Next, look at those that scored a 5. Are there many? Ask, “Why are these nearly impossible to overcome?” After this discussion, you may need to move the obstacle to a different category or, just acknowledge its existence and work around it. (cont.)
