Steps, continued:
• Then, look at those that rated a 3. Ask, “How can these obstacles be overcome?” Start a new flip chart page and write one of the obstacles on the top. Write down the ways to overcome the obstacle that the participants give. (If you are looking at a specific change as part of an Action Team or neighborhood or household team, make and write down action steps that can be taken by the team to overcome the obstacles)
• Finally, look at those obstacles that rated a 4. Ask, “Why are these harder than the 3s?” At this point in the activity you have a few options:
A) If you are talking about change in general or the overall change in nursing home culture, break the group up into as many smaller groups as there are obstacles in the 4 category. Have the small groups each take a look at their assigned obstacle and brainstorm the things that could be done to over come their obstacle. After 5-10 minutes, bring the whole group together and share the work.
B) If you are working on a specific change, break the team up into smaller groups, one for each obstacle 4. Those smaller teams do the same as in the option above (brainstorm, rejoin group, share) and the team then decides which obstacle they will work on together first.
C) Again, if working on specific change, team divides into smaller groups and the session ends here. Those groups then are sent off to brainstorm about their obstacle, decide action steps and actually begin work on overcoming the obstacle. The small groups would then have their own meetings and would function as a sub-team of the action team.
