It is the case, however, that some rural and regional schools can struggle to
offer a languages program.
In 2019, of the 77 Victorian schools unable to offer a language program, 59 were in rural and regional areas.
Most of these were primary or P-12 schools that were unable to recruit a languages teacher.
Despite these challenges, there are some excellent languages programs at secondary schools in rural and regional Victoria:
• At Warrnambool College, French and Indonesian are taught from Years 7 to 12. Both have strong retention rates with high VCE numbers, but Indonesian is a particular stand-out.

In 2019, Warrnambool College had the third highest number of Indonesian Year 12 students in the State.
The Indonesian program has a six-week exchange program with Yogyakarta, which increases students’ language and cultural understanding.
Students studying Indonesian at VCE level make the four-hour trip to Melbourne each year to participate in the Model United Nations conference in Indonesian where they represent a designated country and debate a key global issue entirely in Indonesian.
