LANGUAGES EDUCATION IN VICTORIA – TRENDS IN PROVISION
Enrolments in Languages in Victorian government primary and secondary schools, including the Victorian School of Languages, 1996 – 2018
In terms of trends in languages enrolments:
•Chinese has increased considerably over the period 2012 to 2018, particularly at primary level, and has replaced Italian as most widely taught language by enrolments overall
•French continues to be the most widely studied language at secondary level
• Enrolments in Italian and Japanese remain high in primary and secondary
• Indonesian enrolments have declined in the past three years at secondary level, while holding steady at primary
•German continues to be an important language at secondary level and continues to have high Unit 4 numbers
• Auslan enrolments at primary level have doubled in the past six years.
