INTRODUCTION
People, places, and things. What shapes us as writers? What defines what we choose to
put down on the page? What guides our printed words? People, places, things…
Writing By Writers (WxW) is a 501(c)3 non profit organization whose
mission is to create a rigorous and compassionate environment to learn
the art of reading and writing from accomplished authors…workshops are
taught by nationally known, published authors, who are adept at teaching
the craft of writing to all levels of student. In addition, participants learn
how to read other’s work critically and apply those lessons to their own
writing. (https://www.writingxwriters.org)
Seven fellowship recipients were chosen to participate, for the first time, in the inaugural
Emerging Writers Fellowship at Esalen; geared towards people of color and the LGBTQIA
community, WxW established this opportunity in order to better support and amplify
more voices.
Big Sur is located along Scenic Highway One approximately 150 miles
south of San Francisco and 300 miles north of Los Angeles. The name Big
Sur, was derived from that unexplored and unmapped wilderness area
which lays along the coast south of Monterey. It was simply called El Sur
Grande, The Big South. Today, Big Sur refers to that 90-mile stretch of
rugged coastline between Carmel to the north and San Simeon to the south.
Highway 1 winds along its length and is flanked on one side by the Santa
Lucia Mountains and on the other by the rocky Pacific Coast. The scenic
qualities and the natural grandeur of the coast which result from the
imposing geography, the rich vegetative compositions, and the dramatic
meetings of land and sea are the area's greatest single attraction to the
public. Big Sur has attained a worldwide reputation for its spectacular
beauty. (http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/history.html)
