P. 3

The writer/author Lydia Yuknavitch instructs us, revealing that in her experience, there

is deeper meaning in the spaces in-between that which we write. “Set things next to each
other,” she advises, “See what is revealed in the spaces between…”

For half a century, Esalen Institute has been a primary thought leader and
shapeshifter of the culture, generating and promoting new ideas, methods,
and connections that have transformed our world. (www.esalen.org)

People, places, and things. What shapes us as writers? Stack these together, set them
               side-by-side.

Seven Strangers, Big Sur, a fellowship opportunity.

Maybe it isn’t meaning that precipitates? Maybe it isn’t anything at all? But gratitude
takes many shapes and forms, and here is our small attempt.

A woman named Kim Kranes, is author/creator of "The Wild Unknown: Animal Spirit"

(2018); it’s marketed as a “spirit deck & guidebook”. On the outside deck of The Lodge at
Esalen, the small group of fellow’s gathered with nationally-known authors. They sat

together at a wooden table, pulling cards from this “spirit” deck. Playful. Casual. But

what shaped us in all the space in-between?
