The writer/author Lydia Yuknavitch instructs us, revealing that in her experience, there
is deeper meaning in the spaces in-between that which we write. “Set things next to each
other,” she advises, “See what is revealed in the spaces between…”
For half a century, Esalen Institute has been a primary thought leader and
shapeshifter of the culture, generating and promoting new ideas, methods,

People, places, and things. What shapes us as writers? Stack these together, set them
side-by-side.
Seven Strangers, Big Sur, a fellowship opportunity.
Maybe it isn’t meaning that precipitates? Maybe it isn’t anything at all? But gratitude
takes many shapes and forms, and here is our small attempt.
A woman named Kim Kranes, is author/creator of "The Wild Unknown: Animal Spirit"
(2018); it’s marketed as a “spirit deck & guidebook”. On the outside deck of The Lodge at
Esalen, the small group of fellow’s gathered with nationally-known authors. They sat
together at a wooden table, pulling cards from this “spirit” deck. Playful. Casual. But
what shaped us in all the space in-between?
