ALI TEN HOVE AND MARIAH MILLEN – 49’ER FX
It’s in their genes. The talent demonstrated by this duo is no surprise to most. Ali and Mariah both have fathers who competed in Olympic Sailing for Canada and they both crewed for Frank McLaughlin in two different Olympics - Martin ten Hove crewing in the 470 in 1984 and Johnny Millen in the Flying Dutchman in 1992 (Bronze medal).
Ali and Mariah’s steep climb through the international ranks of the Olympic Skiff fleet has been amazing to behold. After qualifying for the Pan Am Games at the Miami World Cup in January this year, they recently finished 15th at the European Championships in Weymouth, England in May. It will not be long before they crack the top ten internationally.
The Pan Am Games will also be a qualification event for the 49’er FX class. The top ranked team from North America (Canada, USA, Puerto Rica and Mexico) will earn their country a spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Ali and Mariah are especially looking forward to racing
in close quarters with the 2016 Olympic gold medalists who will be representing Brazil at the Pan Am Games as well as top teams from the US, and Argentina. If recent performances are any indication, ten Hove and Millen are poised for a medal performance to solidify their place amongst the elite of women’s sailing.

ROBERT DAVIS – LASER
Robert achieved his primary goal for the winter season by qualifying for both the
Pan American Games and the Olympic Test Event (formerly called the “Pre-Olympics”). Qualifying for these two events were both major milestones in his campaign towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Pan American Games at the beginning of August will give him more major games experience and the Test Event will allow him to continue to build on his experience in racing at the Olympic Venue in Enoshima, Japan, where the sailing events will take place.
The biggest challenge at this point is securing a berth for Canada in the Laser class for Tokyo. The next opportunities
to qualify the country will be at both the Laser World Championships in Sakaiminato, Japan in July, and at the Pan American Games in Paracas, Peru in August.
Robert is currently working with coach Larry Lemieux, a Canadian Olympian who is held in very high regard as an Olympic class coach internationally. Working with Larry and the other athletes on the Canadian Laser Team is allowing Robert to focus squarely on what is important for his development, gives him someone in my corner, and helps the next group of upcoming Canadian Laser sailors. Next up is a training camp in Warnemunde, Germany and the Pan Am Games.
