HOT TIMES AND HOT COMPETITION ON A COOL GREEN
Peter Bennett
Lawn Bowlers are on the green Monday mornings, Wednesday evening, Thursday afternoon and Saturdays. We compete in 20 or more trophy and interclub matches throughout the season. In addition, LBA members run corporate events sponsored by Members. The groups vary in size, a recent one involved 65 participants. This year we expect over 450 guests will have a great time on the green.
LBA members set up the greens, issue bowls and instruct guests on the basics of the game and provide ongoing coaching during the matches. We find that younger people take to the essentials of the game quickly, manage not to bowl over folks on adjoining rinks and have a lot of laughs, after all isn’t that what its all about? Come to the RCYC and have a lot of fun.
Our inter-club matches are keen competitive events. Etobicoke came and did not trounce us badly, we went to the Cricket Club and had a convincing win but recently lost to Balmy Beach, at the Beach by a mere 4 points. We will finish the summer by hosting the Cricket Club and Balmy Beach before traveling off to Islington and Bloor to play Etobicoke.
At home, David Reid and Michael Charles won the Balfour Trophy, Linda and Michael Carter were presented with the Short Mat Bowling Trophy, Joan Taschuk, Donna Meadows and Barbara Gambles won the Woodman Trophy and we were happy to entertain the Muskoka Lawn Bowling Club for the first time, to a very close match.
The green is in good shape, apart from perennial problems under the trees on the north and south boundaries. We will shut down for a week at the end of August to seed with bent grass. It requires three days of warm weather to germinate so that period appears to be the best bet. Problems continue with the ditches but no doubt the Club will deal with those in 2020.
