The boatman can ensure a neat splice by whipping the rope strands with
constrictor knots. To tie a constrictor, use whipping cord and take two
turns around the strand, holding the second turn open with the left index
finger (1). Take the working end between the right thumb and index
finger, transfer the loop to the right middle finger (2) and pass the working
end through both turns (3). Tighten from both ends (4, 5), easing the
second turn down to bind the first.
