               05 STITCH AND WHIP

                      EYE IN PLAITED ROPE

                                               1

                                                                          2

                                               3

                                                                          4
Not as strong as an Eye Splice, but plaited rope is almost impossible to
splice, so it must suffice. Form an eye as required with at least 3 in (75 mm)
tail measured from the throat. Using waxed twine stitch back and forth
from the throat to the end and back. Cut the thread, and hammer the rope
parts together. Now whip from the throat and hammer tight after a few
turns. Halfway through whipping stitch through rope to lock the whipping.
Continue to end and finish with several stitches through the standing part of
               the rope.
