Architectural & Aesthetics Committee

By the time this article comes out hopefully the weather pattern has changed and summer is here.
We had a horrible winter with a lot of tree damage and shrubs having winter burn. It is suggested by our
arborist that homeowners give some Tender Loving Care with a bit of fertilizer at the base of the shrub in
question.
Because of the weather (is it global warming or not?) our landscapers have fallen behind with regards to
mowing, pruning and weed control. We did put down pre-emergence; however because of all the rain the
weeds got a head start.
For your information, every week a group from the A&A committee, our property manager Frank Nieves,
as well as our arborist meets with the landscapers to monitor their progress, and any issues that might
have arisen. Because of the late spring most of the nurseries had slim pickings with regards to material.
We again ask homeowners when planting annuals or even perennials to please not mound up soil around
the tree trucks as we have lost numerous trees because of ROOT GIRDLING. Our arborist explained it,
“that since our soil is predominately clay the trees have a hard time sending roots below the surface and
when soil or munch is mounded around the tree trunk it sends out roots to this soft surface and in turn
chokes the tree”.
We would like to point out a few things.s
*Please do not plant vegetables in the ground in the rear or side of your unit, as the HOA puts down vari-
ous chemicals. Suggest vegetables are placed in pots that are at least 24 inches high.
*Please do not put fl ower pots to close to the edge of the beds or the edge of the walkway, this way it pre-
vents lawn mowers from damaging your fl ower pots.
* Some of the perennials should have been divided in early spring (hosta, ornamental grasses, etc).
*Should you want to redesign the trees or shrubs in the front, side or rear of your unit please contact the
HOA Offi ce to obtain the proper guidance and proper approvals. Please note that all our landscapers have
the proper insurance fi led with the HOA Offi ce. However, should you want to bring someone else onto
the property to do this work, the necessary forms will be given to you for submission to the HOA so that
everyone is covered with the proper insurance.
*As a reminder, if you have not had your dryer vents cleaned in the past few years, it is time
once again to have this completed. If you are a new homeowner you should do this unless you
are sure that the previous homeower took care of this prior to sale.
The A&A Committee is made up of your neighbors who volunteer their time so please cooperate with
them with any suggestions that they may make. The following are our committee members and we are al-
ways looking for additional talent. Harry Koenig & Hal Rosen (Co-chairs) Karen Sachs landscaper coordi-
nator , Susan Saltz-HOA Board Liaison, Members are: Tony Arbisi, Marc Bellow, Luci Besmertnik, Phyl-
lis Frisher, Bonnie Gershon, Karen Grill, Connie Klein, Ann Marie Massaria, Marcia Rosenberg, Heather
Vitale, and Barbara Walsh.
