Saltash United FC - A History




           Football  in  Saltash  was  played  as  long  ago  as  the
       1890's with several different names used, Essa, Saltash
       Stars  and  Saltash  Town.  The  club  disbanded  in
       September 1932 at a special mee ng held in the Saltash
       Guildhall due to the financial posi on of the club.
           Football came back to Saltash a er the Second World
       War  and  the  club  entered  the  Plymouth  and  District
       League. They stayed there for two seasons and then entered the Cornwall
       Senior Cup which was played on a league basis, East and West. The first
       season, 1948/9 in the East Division the Ashes finished 5th with AFC St
       Austell winning  the sec on and then going on to the final  against  the
       winners of the west sec on.
           The last season of the Senior Cup being played on a league basis was
       1950/51 and that turned out to be a great one for the Ashes as they won
       the Senior Cup by 4 goals to 1 in the final against Wadebridge Town. Also
       the Charity Cup was won that season with a 6-2 victory in the final against
       Mousehole AFC and the Herald Cup was won so they achieved the treble.
           1951/52 saw the introduc on of the South Western League and in it's
       first  season  the  Ashes  won  the  League  Cup,  bea ng  Torquay  United
       reserves in the final 3-2. The Ashes also reached the final of the Senior Cup
       but lost to Bugle 3-2. 1953/4 the Ashes won the South Western League
       which was to be one of only two league  tles in the South West, the other
       coming in 1975/6.
           The Ashes stayed in the league un l the end of the 1958/59 season
       when they pulled out for financial reasons and players ge ng old. A er
       one season with no football they entered a team in the new East Cornwall
       League for season 1960/61 which was mainly a reserve league There was
       only eight teams that first season and the Ashes finished in first place on
       goal difference from St Blazey reserves.
           The second season the number of clubs increased to eleven with the
       Ashes finishing in second place. The League Cup was played on a league
       basis with six teams in the East Division which the Ashes won and five
       teams in the West which was won by St Blazey reserves. The final was won
       by the Ashes to give them two trophies in two years.
           The Ashes rejoined the South Western League in season 1962/63 and
       here they stayed un l joining the Western League for the 1976/77 season
       a er winning the South Western league the previous season.
