Saltash United FC - A History cont..
Season 1974/75 the Ashes won the Senior Cup(1-0) against Penzance
AFC in the final and also won the Pra en Cup. The Pra en Cup was played
on a Sunday so a er a league game on the Saturday the players some mes
had a long journey on the Sunday as the cup covered teams from as far afield
as Hampshire and Gloucestershire. In the final that season the Ashes beat
Minehead by 2 goals to 0.
The following season the Ashes reached the final again but lost over two
legs to Fareham Town. Saltash had a lot of success in the Western League
winning four league tles and two league cups but the financial cost was to
high so they came back to the South Western League in 1995. In their me
in the Western League they won the Cornwall Senior Cup four mes, 1981/2
(2-1) against Falmouth Town, 1987/8 (1-0) against Newquay AFC,1990/1
(4-1) against Falmouth Town and 1992/3 (3-2) against Launceston FC.
The Ashes did enter the Western League again in 2004 in the first
division but it only lasted for two seasons with once again the running costs
were to high with away game in mid-week to places like Shepton Mallet and
Minehead with players and management not ge ng home to the early
hours of the following day. So then it was back to the South Western League
for just one season before the forma on of the Peninsula League.
Season 2007/08 saw the introduc on of the South West Peninsula
League with Saltash United being a founder member and this is where the
Ashes have remained ever since, always in the top division.
Over the years the Ashes have won the Cornwall Charity Cup on four
occasions but the last me any silverware was won outright was in 2008/9
when the Ashes beat Bodmin Town in the Peninsula League Charity Bowl
final at Buckland Athle c ground on a very wet Sunday a ernoon.
Season 2016/17 was very successful with the Ashes finishing as runners-
up to Tavistock in the league and reaching the final of the Cornwall Senior
Cup but having to se le for runners-up spot to Bodmin Town. Season
2017/18 and at last a trophy, a er a 25 year wait the Ashes win the Cornwall
Senior Cup 3-2 against Mousehole AFC in the final at St Blazey and finish
fourth in the league to qualify for the 2018/19 F.A.Cup.
Season 2018/19 and the Ashes finish fourth once again in the league and
also li the League Cup for the first me with a 1-0 win over Falmouth Town
in the final but lost in the final of the Senior Cup to Falmouth Town 2-1.
