In 2008, Derek V. Smith, former Chairman and CEO of ChoicePoint, inspired various ChoicePoint employee volunteers to discover ways that
young people could be empowered to
develop greater social consciousness and build their social entrepreneurial spirit by taking action on the causes that matter most to them.
After extensive research, the employee
volunteers found that younger generations
have a desire to get involved and help solve
social problems. However, they lack the
needed education, training, resources and
encouragement to connect with others and therefore take action to improve their communities. These promising findings motivated Derek to assemble a skilled team along with a group of founding volunteer board members to launch GivingPoint, Inc. in January 2009.
GivingPoint is the first online ‘social marketplace’ from which students and promising young social innovators can leverage both online and offline tools of an innovative and unique platform. These tools teach and inspire them to become active in community engagement. GivingPoint made it its mission to teach these prospective social entrepreneurs about the causes of critical issues and how to solve them. The team specifically designed a platform that includes local volunteer opportunities for targeted hands-on experiences, which would, in turn, spark young people’s passion for becoming social innovators and life- long contributors to their society.
