GivingPoint Project Report
•••
GivingPoint currently does not receive much income from federal grants. According to the Income Statement for 2016, only $1430 was generated from grants, which represents roughly 0.3% percent of the total income. Most grants require nonprofit organizations to have audited financials to be eligible to apply. Since GivingPoint currently fails to meet this requirement, they aren’t eligible to apply. However, with future plans to have their financials audited this year, their grant inflows are projected to increase substantially over the years.
We met with the Director of the Risk Management Foundation, David Buechner, who is responsible for managing an endowment of over $15 million, to discuss fundraising. Mr. Buechner gave us a wealth of information regarding suggestions and advice on how to raise funds more efficiently.
First, we discussed the benefits of hiring a contract or part time grant writer, which is discussed more in depth in the recommendations, and he also provided us with an exhaustive list of foundations that donate to nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on social leadership (found in the Appendix).
After assessing best practices of similar organizations, such as Junior Achievement, we discovered that this is a very popular option these organizations take. This allows these organizations to leverage the corporate contacts and skills that these knowledgeable professionals have to increase the likelihood of obtaining more funds.
Corporate Sponsorships
As previously mentioned, similar nonprofit organizations have partnered with or gained sponsorship from large companies interested in increasing their visibility while engaging in corporate social responsibility. After GivingPoint’s financials have been audited, thus increasing their transparency and gaining more recognition and acceptance from external parties, they are more likely to secure corporate sponsorships.
