BW: Jim Suhler, he sent me a text and said – I’m not going to tell you what he said [laughs], but
he expressed his dismay that it was actually going to happen, you know what I mean? And we're
still kind of doing that.
BiTS: Yeah, it's pretty surprising. I wondered whether there were any kind of contractual
problems with Mayall, or anything like
that?
BW: No, nothing at all to do with John.
He was not involved in it at all. It was
just paperwork and publishing and all
that kind of stuff, you know.
BiTS: Well, for the benefit of people in
the UK who will not know, but I do,
explain the expression Texas Scratch.
BW: Well, to tell you the truth, I had
never heard that in my life. I had the
song ‘I've Got The Itch, But I Ain't Got
The Scratch’, and the next thing I know,
Arnie Goodman has called me up and
go, Hey, it's ‘Texas scratch’. I said, why is it ‘Texas Scratch’? What does that mean? And he goes
well in your song you ain't got the scratch, means you ain't got the money, right? And you're in
Texas, right? So that's what I deem it to be. I never sat very well with it, but here we are.
BiTS: And that became the name of the band, of course.
BW: Well, right now, there is no band. I mean, like I say we got together and recorded it and
went our separate ways and I'm sure if we get together and do some touring dates on it, we'll
probably call it the Texas Scratch Band.
BiTS: In that sense, of course, scratch means made-up on the instant [laughing].
BW: Yeah, yeah. I saw something – this got to me the other day. If you look on the, I can't think
of the word when you click on the thing and the information on the download pops up. It says
something about Texas scratch being a style of guitar playing related to the Carter Scratch, and
I said, no, no, no, no, no. I don't know who thought of that. We're still working on it with Mike
Carden at Quarto Valley, and we're going to go back over and change a few things up and probably
try to get everything a little straighter, you know.
BiTS: So do you have any plans to tour with the album at the moment?
BW: Not yet. We haven't had time to think about it yet, you know what I mean? Hopefully, we
can get out and play a little bit.
BiTS: When you recorded the album, Buddy, did you go into the studio with a whole set of songs
ready to do, or did you make stuff up in the studio?
BW: Well, I had, like I say, I had those two songs that that I had written for this project and as it
turned out, they didn't get released and I wound up using on my other record. But I mean, I wrote,
‘Ain’t Got The Scratch’ and ‘Texas Trios’ to be used on this “Texas Scratch” album and I wanted,
if it was possible at all, to do the Nitzinger tune kind of in tribute to him. He's not playing these
days, but he still lives in Fort Worth. Those were my three and then Jim had the ‘Purple Mountain
Flask’ and I think that he was still working on that one when we came in here because he had to
