for best guitarist, the “Albert King Award,” which really opened up a lot of doors for us touring
the US and internationally.
My brother, sister and I won the blues music award for Best Contemporary Blues Album
“Badlands” in 2014.
We also were inducted into the Kansas Hall of Fame in 2017. This one really felt special since it
was so close to home. That Hall of Fame induction truly was an honor.
LL: How did you wind up on tour opening for George Thorogood?
NS: While Danielle and I were still performing as Trampled Under Foot, we were offered the
chance to tour with him in Canada. It was the most beneficial thing that we could’ve done in
Canada because we were well known in the blues community at the time, yet we had not played
Canada very often so when we did, it was sensational, and it really worked out very well. George
Thorogood crew is impeccable and such a joy to be around. George Thorogood is a wonderful
guy. He gives his heart out every night on stage and is a fabulous front man. The crew members
have become great friends over the years,
A few years back I ran into some of the fellas in the Destroyers down at the Rum Boogie during
the International Blues Competition in Memphis Tennessee. We had a wonderful time hanging
out and we put the idea together for
us to do some dates. It has been an
honour and a pleasure to do over 50
shows with George Thorogood.
Hopefully many more to come!
LL: Let’s talk about your new
release “What Key Is Trouble In?”
What a great title! What was your
vision and concept for the album?
NS: I’ve been having fun playing with
lyrics and ideas- playing with an
open-answered question as a title.
One day, me and the band we were
just chatting, and this concept came
to me. There are so many different
types and troubles people go through
and it’s not only songs about love and
troubles, it’s about social troubles,
social violence, homelessness, and
about people who are just stuck in a
bad situation.
This was a very fun album to record! 12 of the 13 tracks were recorded at Bell Sound Labs in
Norman OK. Trent Bell is an excellent engineer, and really easy person to work with.
‘Hard Drivin’ Woman’ was recorded in Cadiz, OH at Tony’s Treasures studio with Mark Puskarich
during a recording session for the Benefit Foundation “Blues For A Cure”.
My manager and friend Chris Hardwick and I produced this record together. I was very thankful
for his input, and I feel we put a great album together.
