In 2016-17, the standardized assessment programme at BHS comprised the following tasks:
Year 1 & 2 - Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (PIPS)
Year 3 & 6 - Interactive Computerised Assessment System (InCAS)
Years 4, 5 & 6 - International Schools Assessment (ISA)
The results outlined below illustrate the achievement of the cohorts concerned:
PIPS
The PIPs assessment is administered by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) at
Durham University and was taken by students at the start of Year 1 and Year 2. Over 2,000
schools (most of whom are in the U.K.) use CEM’s primary assessments. The assessment
compares each student’s performance in Mathematics and Reading with that of the average
child in the whole PIPs cohort worldwide. The PIPS assessment is designed to give valuable
one-to-one time between teacher and child. The assessment is computer-based and carried
out one-to-one with each child, with a teacher controlling the computer. The computer-based
adaptive assessment complements ongoing observational assessment and can help teachers to
identify individual needs that may be overlooked by observation alone.
The PIPS assessment covers the following specific areas of learning and development:
Literacy – including handwriting; vocabulary acquisition; understanding reading fundamentals;
phonological awareness; letter, word and pattern recognition; and comprehension.
Numeracy – including ideas about maths; quantity and spatial position; identifying numbers;
counting; identifying shapes; problem solving; and simple arithmetic.
The data below show that the average Beacon Hill School student in both Year 1 and Year 2
attained higher than the average student in the corresponding PIPs cohort.
