Contacting Your Member of Congress - Fact or Fiction? Research Project
Understand that members of Congress usually try to dodge and weave because they try to make everyone
feel their voice is being heard. Although it's nice to have the satisfaction that you've been heard, press them
to find out exactly where they stand on the issue, and why. Be persistent and be prepared for him or her
to express great empathy with your position and make you feel good, but don’t expect him or her to take
a formal position.
Keep an eye on your representative's action or inaction on your issue. If they acted on your behalf, send
a 'Thank You' email or letter. If you don't see them taking action on the issue you discussed, make a
follow-up call, email or write a letter reminding them of your discussion and hope that your messages are
getting through.
