Recently, there have been newspaper reports that the government would not subsidize the Discovery Bay-Central ferry service, because the ‘private ferry service’ (as defined by the government) should not be subsidized by public funds. Even though the justification may sound reasonable to some, DB residents probably understand the possible extent of the adverse impact on our ferry service. Now, DB is caught in a dilemma of quality and price. Some people are worried about whether DB will become the next Park Island! In fact, apart from subsidies, the Government's ferry policy review should have included other options to improve the ferry services of DB and Park Island in order to prevent a serious decline in the service quality or even a complete halt. Transportation is a necessity in everyone’s life, and it is also a significant public interest of residents. Even though the DB ferry is classified as a private route, the government is still duty-bound to protect the basic interest of the public. They should not regard subsidies as the only way to improve. In open discussions, ideas such as Fuel Stabilization Fund and deprivatization have come up. The government should proactively consider more options, rather than standing idly by, leaving residents and the developer entangled in their eternal debates. With little progress being made, the only victims are DB’s residents.
