Performance Case Study
Faster Reaction Time, Better Decision making
De’Quan Hampton, USC, WR
Hampton worked with TierOne and Evo Sports
Training to prepare for the USC Pro-Day. Along with the
traditional speed, strength, and agility
development provided by Evo, Hampton received
focused attention training to improve task focus, reaction
time, and game-time awareness. This cognitive training
was integrated into the physical skills and speed training
delivered by Evo, creating a comprehensive performance
training program that enhanced development on multiple
levels. Hampton also learned how to manage emotion to
achieve flow (peak) performance states on demand. To
help Hampton manage high-stress situations, like Pro-Day,
TierOne taught him visualization and mental rehearsal

enhance confidence and increase task performance using

tive self-talk.
As part of the TierOne assessment, Hampton’s cognitive processing speed and task decision making skills
were assessed using a modified Attentional Network Test (ANT). The ANT measures the brain’s attentional
network that is critical for reaction time and decision-making on the field. Hampton scored in the 92 percen-
tile, indicating that he is able to process information and make accurate decisions faster than 92% of those
who have previously taken the test. Hampton is know for his quickness off the ball and ability to get separa-
tion from DBs, it is likely that these abilities are enhanced by his cognitive processing speed. Research
shows that cognitive processing speed can be improved using focused attention training by approximately
one to three-tenths of a second. This increase in cognitive processing equates to 1-3 yards of gained field
space for the athlete.
SENAPTEC Cognitive Training System
Most high-performance athletes and coaches see the performance ad-
vantages of cognitive training, but don’t think they have the time to do it.
That’s why TierOne has developed a unique and sophisticated integrated
training program that mixes cognitive drills with physical training routines; al-
lowing the athlete to flex their body AND their mind, in the same amount of
time as a regular workout. Following the science of work to rest ratios from
strength and conditioning, cognitive training is inserted into periods of rest or
transition. This can be done through low-tech methods such as props, pen &
paper, or verbal coaching, or it can be achieved through high-tech methods
using technology such as the SENAPTEC training system. The SENAPTEC
SENAPTEC training system, system has a variety of exercises designed to train specific areas of cognitive
perception span task . performance. The system allows TierOne performance coaches to write pro-
tocols and progressions for their clients to follow, just like a physical training regimen. The ability to integrate
cognition development within physical training allows athletes to experience the way their brain responds to
stress and fatigue. Under stress and duress, individuals often see slower reactions times and processing
speeds, improper decision-making, and even problems to their visual field. This integrated training allows an
athlete to train and optimize the mind during times of stress and duress, improving mental toughness, endur-
ance, reaction time, and decision making. The mind and body that train together, perform together!
