will forever be a treasured keepsake in the
Perdue family.
And of course, to Annie and Shirley, my great-
grandmother and mother, without their
wisdom, strong leadership, and nurturing, none
of this would have been possible. They planted
in me the seeds of greatness, even though for
many years I kept brushing off the fertilizer. I
give a lot of credence to Proverbs 22:6. “Train
up a child in the way he should go, and when
he is old, he will not depart from it.” I
underlined “old” because it took many failures
in my youth and adult life to finally get it. I’m
thankful to say that I’m still a work in progress.
The stumbling blocks in my life were and
continue to be only stepping-stones. “Failure is
just an event, not a person.” That’s one of the
greatest lessons they taught me and it’s the
overarching theme of this book.
