“masculine man”. Patriarchal ideologies suggest that men are not to wear anything
that is considered feminine, including makeup of any sort. Wearing lipstick due to
their androgynous nature defies traditional ideals of masculinity, promoting the
notion that men and women should have no fixed boundaries of what they can and
can not wear due to the gender they identify with. Although the meaning has been
debated, in our representation of androgyny the act of Connor and Jay smearing
their lipstick reinforces the idea of gender transgression. Lipstick, when red and
purple, connote seductive, promiscuous ideals. This is due to how sexualised and
feminine the colours have become; traditional ideals of femininity influenced
women.
