Kissing: This is an intuitive representation that shows the love between two
individuals and their androgynous representation.
Our friends, Connor and Jay identify as men. It is difficult for audiences to
distinguish their gender because they choose to perform it unconventionally in
everyday life. Audiences often look for signs of traditionally masculine and
feminine traits to draw conclusions about one’s gender. However, their clothing is a
mix of both stereotypically masculine and feminine elements. Connor has short
hair and is wearing a denim jacket but also a bra underneath and is wearing
makeup. Jay is wearing a shirt with a conventionally feminine print and pink
colours within the pattern. Jay has facial hair, a traditionally masculine trait, but is
wearing a bold purple lip colour; a traditionally feminine trait. Already
conventional gender roles have been defied due to the combination of masculine
and feminine characteristics.
The two are embracing, leaning for a kiss and thus shattering the dominant
discourse of heteronormativity and gender binaries. Their androgynous expression
of gender is a rebellion against the norms of the society. These traditional
conventions suggest that individuals who identify as men must present themselves
as masculine; wearing what the society deems masculine- dark colours, plain
shirts, pants, leather jackets. We’ve made use of color collocation to reach the visual
and discourse impact. We show inclusiveness and diversity through these colorful
flowers as they encode a liberating and inspirational tone within the image.
