involved. The candid representation of the two leaning in to romantically kiss is
again, a rebellion against heteronormativity due to how natural and authentic the
two looks. Androgyny shatters heteronormative ideologies surrounding what it
means to be a masculine man; ideologies that suggest a man should only be
intimate and romantically involved with a woman. The intertwining of Connor and
Jay’s arms combined with the intimate placement of Connor’s hand on Jay’s waist,
and Jay’s on Connor’s wrist strengthens this idea. The close proximity of the
androgynous two combined with the intimate positioning of their arms and hands
symbolises unity between genders. It acknowledges the fact that gender is a social
construct, and symbolises the idea that gender representations should not be
divided, fixed, and put into boxes. Gender should not be defined and connected
with specific ideas of masculinity and femininity; ideas that we are expected to
conform too. The social construct of gender should be socially accepted as, unfixed,
unruly, and free.
