was for Love.  He parred hole one, Lipscomb easily aced to win his first

               major and the first “Invitational” tournament.


               In the amateur division, Mike Baldoza smoothed his way through the
                                                                                                           th
               tournament and won by three strokes over Andy Young, even with a 5
               round score of 35.  The major win for Baldoza was his third up to this

               time in his career.  The previous year he won the Northern Open and
               the National Championship in the amateur division.  Mike Baldoza

               would go on to be the first PPA Pro player to win $50,000 for one

               tournament - winning the 1973 World Putting Championship.












































               The following year, the Southern Invitational traveled north, and the

               official name changed to The National Invitational, held in Indianapolis,
               Indiana on June 12 and 13.  Interestingly, this tournament became an

               “open” invitational. There were no formal, embossed letters sent out
