The Rebirth of the Strong Caribbean Woman
WHILE struggling with the reality of being a
human, instead of a myth, a strong Caribbean
woman passed away. Medical sources said she
died of natural causes, but those who knew her
said she died from being silent, when she should
have been screaming!!!! Smiling, when she
should have been raging from being sick and not
wanting anyone to know, because her pain might
inconvenience them. She died from an overdose
of negative people clinging to her soul, when she
didn't even have energy for herself…from loving
men who don't love themselves, and could only
offer her a crippled reflection. She died from
raising children alone as a single parent….died from hearing the truth from
her wise grandmother who told her about her mixed culture. The strong
Caribbean woman is dead. She died from being dragged down and sat
upon by bald women posing as her sistas and friends….died from
tolerating Mr. Pitiful, just to have a man around the house. She died from
sacrificing herself for everyone and everything when all she really wanted
was to be accepted as just a woman from the Caribbean. She died from not
being allowed to show her weakness without being chastised by the lazy
and hazy…died from hiding her real feelings until they became hard and
bitter enough to invade her room and breast like Angry tumors! She died
from being too Caribbean and died again from not being Caribbean
enough…..died from being misinformed about her mind, her body, culture
and the extent of her royal capabilities. And sometimes when she refused
to die, or just refused to give in, she was killed by the lethal image of not
recognizing her true beauty, golden locks of hair, high cheekbones,
vibrant lips of color.
She died because she did not realize she was the giver of life, the Heart and
Soul of her family. She died because her life could not be an open book,
and was stomped to death by racism and sexism, executed by Hi-Tech
ignorance while she carried the family in her belly, the Caribbean
community on her head and the ethnicity of our culture on her back! She
died because she was judged by the color of her skin, by the texture of her
hair, or how she speaks with the accent of her cultural heritage! Yes, this
strong Caribbean woman is dead! Or is she…..This Caribbean woman rose
from the dead, because she realized that she defines who she is and how
she wants people to see her when she stands tall in her COMMUNITY, in
her FAITH, in her TRUTH, and most of all in her CULTURE! I am a
woman of the Caribbean. I share this with Caribbean Women, and
Christian Women everywhere…….
