The boy who was deaf and dumb
428 CHRIST'S TEACHI GS, MIRA ES .AND CHURCH
The man out of whom He had driven the devils begged to be taken along, but Jesus refused. ''ReĀ turn to thy house,'' He said to him, ''and tell what great things God hath done to thee." So he went his way and told all through Decapolis the story of the great miracle that Jesus had wrought.
When Jesus and the three apostles came down from the mountain after His trans guration, they found the other apostles surrounded by a great crowd of people. Everyone seemed to be greatly excited and some sort of argument was going on. Jesus asked, ''What do you question about among yourselvesT'' A man pushed through the crowd and said, "Master, I have brought my son to Thee. He has an evil spirit that has made him dumb. The devil takes him and dashes him to the ground. The boy foams at the mouth and gnashes his teeth, and is pining away. I spoke to Thy disciples and asked them to cast out the evil spirit but they could not." Jesus said, "Bring hither thy son.''
They brought the boy to Him and at once the devil began to torture him. He threw him upon the ground and the boy rolled about, foaming at the lips. "How long is it since this hath happened to himT" Jesus asked the father. "From his infancy," he answered, "and often-times hath he cast him into the re and into the water, trying to destroy him. If Thou canst do anything, have pity on us and help us." Jesus said to him, "If thou canst believe, all things are possible." Bursting into tears, the father of the boy cried out, "I do believe; Lord, help my unbelief."
