476 CHRIST REDEEMS THE WORLD
Some of them went up to Jesus and said, "Master, rebuke thy disciples.'' Jesus answered, ''I say to you that if these shall hold their peace, the stones will cry out.''
The procession had now reached the top of the hill, and across the valley they could see the city of Jeru salem gleaming in the sunlight. High over all the other buildings and houses rose the Temple, its pinna cle pointing heavenward.
Jesus bade them pause. For a while He gazed upon the city silently. Then He began to weep and said, ''Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often
would I h e gathered together thy children as a hen doth gather her chickens under her wi , and thou wouldst not. If thou hadst known, and that in this thy day, the things that are to thy peace; but now they are hidden from thy eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, and thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee around and straiten thee on every side, and beat thee at to the ground, and thy children o are in thee ; and they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone, because thou hast not known
the time of thy salvation."
