474 CHRIST REDEEMS THE WORLD
Judas said this, not because he really loved the poor, but because he loved money. Jesus had placed great con dence in him and had given him charge of the o erings which the people made to them from time to time and which they used to purchase for themselves atever food or clothing was necessary.
Jesus said, "Why do you trouble her1 She hath wrought a good work upon Me. For the poor you have always with you; whensoever you will, you may do them good. But Me you have not always. She is come beforehand to anoint My body for the burial. Amen, I say to you, wheresoever this Gospel shall be preached to the whole world, that also which she hath done shall be told for a memory of her.''
The next day Jesus left Bethania and set out boldly for Jerusalem. Sending two of His apostles ahead to a little tmvn called Bethphage, which is near the Mount of Olives, He said to them, "Go into the town which is over yonder, and when you enter you shall see the colt of an ass tied, which no man hath ever ridden. Loose him and bring him hither. And if any man shall ask you, 'Why do you loose him1' say to him, 'Because the Lord hath need of his service,' and he will immediately let him go.''
Now all of this was done that the words of the prophet Isaias might be ful lled, who said, "Tell ye the daughter of Sion, behold thy King cometh to thee, meek and sitting upon an ass.''
The disciples did as Jesus commanded them. The road was crowded with throngs of people on their way to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of the Pasch. The
