ABRAHAM, THE FATHER OF THE CHOSEN PEOPLE 39
When Ismael was born, God said to Abram, ''I am the Almighty God; walk before me and be perfect. My covenant is  th thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name be called any more Abram, but thou shalt be called Abraham
(which means Father of Many Nations). And Sarai, thy wife, thou shall not call Sarai, but Sara (which means Princess). And I will bless her, and of her I will give thee a son, whom I will bless. Thou shalt call his name Isaac. And nations and kings of people shall spring from him.''
God also told Abram that his descendants would live for a time in a land of strangers, who would make slaves of them and a ict them for many years. But in the end, they would come back to the Land of Chanaan.
3. THREE STRANGERS V!SIT ABRAHAM
One day when Abraham was sitting at the door of The his tent, he saw three strangers walking towards him. Thr  He knew at once that these were not ordinary men, Gu s and he went forth to meet them. Bowing low, he greeted them, saying, "Lord, do not pass by my tent. Rest here under the trees, and I shall bring water to wash your feet and food to strengthen you on your way."
The strangers accepted the invitation, and Abraham hurried to have food prepared for them. Sara baked cakes of meal, and Abraham selected the best calf of his  ock and gave it to a herdsman to prepare for cooking. When the meal was ready, it was set before_
