Visual Literacy: Develop research skills creating a class presentation
about the role of the designer
The time has come to present your research to your fellow classmates in order to teach them about the
various contexts in which design operates. Remember you are now their teacher and you need to make
sure that the information you are presenting will be understood and remembered.
When you present, remember the following things to improve your mark:
x Keep eye contact with members of the audience
x Be fully prepared so that you know what you are talking about and can remember what to say
x Be organised so that everything runs smoothly
x Be careful not to speak too softly or too fast, otherwise your classmates will not be able to hear
and understand what you saying. Remember that they are also expected to take notes as you
present
x Look at the rubric again to see how you will be assessed and focus on these criteria
x Try not to be too nervous as this will affect the way that you behave- take some deep breaths
and enjoy the experience. Your hard work and the time you have dedicated to prepare will pay
off!
Now it’s time to debate... so get your game on!
After everyone has presented... it time for the “You’re not worthy of the title” game show. Your teacher
will be the game show host and keep track of the teams. Each group will now form a team and
represent the designer and their work. Your team will take part in the game show, which will consist of
four rounds.
As a team, you must try to convince the game show host that your designer/design company and
design are the most successful as designers who contributed (first round), observed (second round)
and were a social commentators (third round). Think hard, think creatively! Fight for your team to stay
in the game!
During each round the teams will have an opportunity to argue why their designer, or design company,
was better at each specific role. Remember to substantiate your opinions with factual information or
examples. Your team may challenge other teams when they present- if you do not agree with what they
are saying or they are not making sense. You may also ask other teams questions in order to
understand the information they have presented a little better. After each round is complete and each
team has presented their information the teams will all write down the name of a designer or company
which is “not worthy of the title.” The team with the most votes against them has to leave the game.
In the final round, the teams battle it out to be voted as of “being worthy the title”- the most successful
case study to fulfil the roles of a designer. Teams may then present any information that they haven’t
yet mentioned in the other three rounds. Once all the competing teams have presented their
arguments, voting takes place but this time class members vote as individuals rather than in teams,
including those that got disqualified in the previous rounds. In this round, class members will vote for
the team that they think is the most successful. You may not vote for your own team.
The game show host will count the votes and announce the winning designer or design company!
