ARCHITECTURE

Have you ever thought about who designed your house? An artist and designer can also be an
architect who designs buildings from homes to huge skyscrapers. In our rainbow nation, there are
people from different races and cultures. It is exciting when some of our architects combine what is
good from Africa with modern ideas to produce something that is really South African. Unfortunately,
in years gone by, many of our buildings were constructed as copies of famous buildings from
overseas. We also find a hodgepodge of bad design in the suburbs of our various cities where
money rules and not aesthetic taste. Have you thought about architecture? How it affects
your life and what it does for you? Look at the house you live in.
What do you like about your house? If there is something that
you could change what would it be? Let’s think about it in an
architectural way:

x its overall shape
x the shapes within the overall shape
x its layout or plan
x its basic structure
x the materials used in
its construction.
