The Colosseum, Rome The Pantheon, Rome
It was after the Emperor Constantine had officially
established Christianity in 313 AD that church building
began. About this time the Roman empire split in half- the
eastern half was known as Byzantium with its capital
being Constantinople. The Byzantine buildings showed
great use of space, which was covered by a dome.
The architectural style in Europe after the fall of the
Roman Empire became known as Romanesque. It is EASTERN
very evident in the semi-circular arches at the head of
the windows one sees on buildings today. With the
great religious feeling of the Middle Ages, people
wanted to reach heavenwards and so in the 12th and
13th centuries the Gothic style came into being. The
churches built during this period were very tall with
buttresses keeping the walls from falling outwards.
From a bird’s eye view the shape of the churches was
that of a cross.
