Cape Dutch Architecture
th
When the Dutch came to the Cape they adapted 17 century Dutch architecture to the very
different conditions pertaining at the Cape. The simple, often angular Dutch gable was reshaped
with complex rounded shapes, or with a combination of angular and rounded shapes.
Many Cape Dutch farmhouses with their characteristic thatched roofs, wooden sash windows
(where the two halves of the window can slide up or down) with wooden shutters and their
whitewashed walls, still remain on the wine estates in the Western Cape. Groot Constantia,
originally built by Governor Simon van der Stel in 1692 is the grandest and best known of these
beautiful homesteads.
