Create in 3D: produce a model of a South African public space
Work through the following activities in order to develop your idea:
You must analyse and plan how you will use the art elements and design principles in your work to
communicate a mood and message to the general public about the youth.
1) Briefly explain the message and mood you want to communicate through your public space:
....................................................................................................................................................................
....................................................................................................................................................................
....................................................................................................................................................................
....................................................................................................................................................................
2) Use the following table to finalise your ideas. Write down four words in the grey row to describe the
concept and appearance of the space. Now briefly explain in each of the blocks how you will
change the art elements and design principles to communicate this to the general public:

3) Remember to use a wide variety of construction techniques in your model. These may include
pasting, modelling, wrapping, tying, stitching, joining and scoring. Challenge yourself to use your
imagination and create new techniques to use in your model.
4) Make sure that you show good craftsmanship in your work. Dedicate your time, concentrate on
what you are doing and make sure that the model looks finished. Pay attention to small details.
5) When working in three dimensions a designer needs to consider the use of planes. A plane is
described as a flat surface, which makes up a form- it is two-dimensional. Look at the examples of
South African contemporary buildings that follow. Can you observe how planes have been used in
interesting ways? How do you plan to use planes in your work?
6) Architects and interior designers need to develop their spatial awareness these design disciplines
are three-dimensional- they take up space. As you work, continually look at your model from different
angles, making sure that it looks good no matter where the viewer is positioned. Make sure that
interesting things happen to the form as one moves around it.
7) Consider how the visual perspective will affect the space- if the viewer is looking from a distance,
from a high angle or from a low angle? Will the space change?
