MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
OF THE INSTITUTE
It is an honor for our Institute to present you with the eighth
volume of the medical-halachic responsa of the gaon Rav Yitzchak
Zilberstein shlit”a.
Originally compiled in the Hebrew Shiurei Torah Lerofim, these
books are a widespread source of illumination regarding various
modern-day medical quandaries. Dr. Fred Rosner’s expertise and
scholarship have born fruit, providing the English speaker with a
precise and intricate translation of this vital work. This volume is a
translation of the second half of volume four of the Hebrew series.
The publication of this volume is especially poignant as it comes on
the heels of a year spent in isolation due to the worldwide spread of
the corona virus. For a full year, our Batei Midrashim were desolate.
The words of Shlomo Hamelech in Koheles came to life, as we dealt
with the painful reality of “a time to refrain from embracing,” and
socially distanced ourselves four cubic centimeters away from each
other. At the same time, the words of David Hamelech came to life as
well, as we embraced closeness to Hashem.
Following this period of seclusion and growth, Hashem, with
boundless compassion, allowed us back into our schools and shuls.
Soon, however, He sent us other reminders of His Omniscience. In
Meron on the holy day of the passing of Rabi Shimon bar Yochai,
forty-five holy souls of all ages, a veritable microcosm of the greater
family of Am Yisrael, were taken from us. On the night of Shavuos,
during a Chanukas Habayis in Karlin, others were taken as well.
