‘Oh Bryant. Please help me. Arnold told me he had opened an account here and I want to see if he
has left any contact for me but this woman says no.’

The woman turned to me. ‘I am very sorry but we do not have an account for a Mister Arnold
            Warner.’

‘Could he have possibly had an account which is now closed?’ I ventured.

‘Just one moment and I will check.’

She started to turn over the pages of her book.

‘No, I am sorry we have not had an account in that name.’

I turned to Gabriela. ‘Might he have opened an account in a different name?’

She looked confused. ‘Why would he do that?’

I shrugged my shoulders. ‘I was just grasping at straws I guess.’

Obviously, Gabriela didn’t realise that he would have opened the account in his new persona, Peter
Collins. She clearly did not know Arnold had applied for a false passport.

I took her by the arm. ‘Come on, we have to talk. Thank you for your trouble.’ I told the woman
who smiled a weak smile in return.

I held Gabriela’s arm tight as we crossed back the Chiswick High Road and to the street behind
Tom’s Cabin where my car was parked. We got in but I didn’t start the engine.

‘Right Miss Morales, tell me what is going on.’

Her eyes flashed, ‘Well meester Bryant, you tell me what is going on. You are no immigration
because when I get to my flat after speaking with you, everything is gone, my clothes, my
accessories. Everything! Why you do this to me? Who are you?’

I chose not to answer her question but asked one of my own. ‘Where did you stay last night?’

‘I stayed in a small hotel on the Bayswater Road. It was terrible. There were prostitutes coming and
going all night and the man on the desk thought I was a prostitute and wanted me to pay much

money for my room but when I argued, he let me have it for the normal price. I can’t go back
            there.’

‘So what are you going to do, where are you going to stay?’

‘I don’t know. I will have to find another hotel, one that doesn’t supply call girls.’

‘I have a spare bedroom. You can stay there until you get yourself sorted out if you like.’

‘That is very kind of you but what are you doing here?’
