food.
‘Not seen you in here before. Just visiting?’ Shapur at last turned to begin a conversation.
‘Kind of. Moving up from New York shortly. Just tied the lease up this morning.’
‘That’s not a pure American accent. Are you from Europe?’
‘Well spotted. Yes I’m from England.’
‘Aha. I thought so. I have cousins in Leicester. Are you from there?’
‘No. Other end of the country!
‘So where you moving to?’

Mick had done his homework.
Shapur looked a little embarrassed at his outburst but he was a natural talker and talking was
always good for business.
‘How’s the Bourekas? My wife, Azarin, she make them’
‘Azarin turned with a shy smile at the mention of her name.
‘Very tasty. Azarin. You are a good cook.’ Mick held his bottle of sprite up in a token of salute.
‘So what you doing this side of the river?’
‘Friend of mine emigrated to Australia recently. Gave me the name of an investment advisor in this
district but damn me if I haven’t lost his name and address and my friend won’t be settled in
Australia yet so I can’t call him. The guy called me recently but the number he called me from turns
out to be a payphone.’
‘A payphone!’ Shapur looked puzzled, ‘are you sure the guy is legit?’
‘My friend wouldn’t do business with anyone who might be shady. I’ve tracked the payphone; it’s
the one right outside. Thought I’d come in here, have something to eat and think what to do next.’

answered him very briefly.
