‘Why?’
‘Because he owes money.’
He laughed. ‘Everybody owes money. So what’s the big deal?’
‘People who owe the Cipriatono brothers money have to pay it back when the time comes,
otherwise,’ I made a throat cutting gesture, ‘you know what I mean?’
Evidently impressed by the Mafia sounding name he called out, in his own language, to whoever
was in the back room. Another Pakistani appeared.
‘You looking for the American?’
‘Yes. Did you ever take him anywhere?’
He paused so I took two twenty’s from my wallet and gave them one each.
‘Perhaps this will help your memory.’
‘I took him to Chiswick.’
‘Whereabouts?’
He hesitated again.
‘You are not getting any more money, understand?’
The first Pakistani spoke rapidly but I just detected the name Cipriatono.
‘I parked and waited just off the Chiswick High Road but he never told me where he was going. I got
out of the cab to have a smoke and walked to the corner. He was in the Chiswick Business
Accommodation Bureau. I saw him pay the girl some cash so I presumed he had just opened an
account there’
‘Did he take anything with him or bring anything back from there?’
‘Not that I could see’
‘Did you take him anywhere else?’
‘Yeh. The next day I took him to the Edgware Road. Cost him a packet that trip but I never took him
anywhere else after that.
‘Did you see where he went?’
‘Nah, Traffic was very busy so I couldn’t hang around.
‘OK thanks, you’ve been very helpful.’ I decided to forget about Gabriela for now and made my way
back to the office where a very excited Brenda was waiting for me.
