Brenda returned to her office and I telephoned George but his secretary said he was still at number
ten so I turned my thoughts to Gabriela Morales. On the face of it, it seemed my theory of Gabriela
being dumped was the most logical. The old dear on the first floor might never have realised that
the American, Warner, was living with Gabriela but why had her flat been cleaned and by who and
why was it cleaned out at the time she was with Mex and me and where was she now? She was
going to be more difficult to find than Warner.
I strolled to the door to Brenda’s office just as her Fax machine sprang into life.
I watched as the paper slowly emerged with a picture of a man’s face.
‘This him Bren?’
‘This is him, Peter Collins alias Arnold Warner.’
‘Have they sent his passport yet?’
‘Yes, they released it two weeks ago.’
I tore the picture off the machine.
‘OK thanks Bren. I’ll get over to Chiswick first thing tomorrow, and listen, I don’t think you will find
much but see what you can dig up on Arnold Warner’s past. Someone who never had their photo
taken and parents with no friends intrigues me.’
