‘Yes you were right. There were only a few Post Office mail-forwarding applications to Mail Boxes.
This one looks iffish. Application from a Peter Collins. I checked the address where the mail was
forwarded from and he has never been on the electoral roll, he has no National Health Insurance
number, never passed a driving test, never paid tax. I have a friend in the Family Record Centre who
did a quick check for me, a Peter Collins passed away in Bermondsey in 1972 aged eight months.’

‘Well done Bren. What is the forwarding address?

‘Chiswick Business and Accommodation Bureau’

‘Really? Well that confirms the cabby’s story. Have you been on to Liverpool Passport Office yet?’ I
asked.

‘Not yet, I thought I would check this with you first.’

‘Well that’s OK it certainly looks like you’ve found him. We want to know if it has been approved
and if so when it was posted. There’s a long delay as usual this time of year so it might not have
gone through yet. If it hasn’t then tell them we want it posted today. We also want a copy of the
passport photograph, priority.’

‘OK. Will do. There is something else. While I was waiting for you, I did a quick check on Mr and Mrs
Warner’s car accident. The car was hired from a small firm in the town of Conway about 14 miles
from Myrtle Beach.’

‘Really? Why would they go on a holiday to Myrtle Beach but hire a car from somewhere else and
why not hire one from their hometown, Fayetteville?’

‘You’ve missed the important question’

‘Which is?’

Who drove? Neither of them had a driving licence.’

‘And they were the only two in the car? Who hired the car?’

‘Apparently Mr James Warner but the final mystery, where was their baggage?’

‘So. We think this was no accident, right Bren?’

‘It certainly looks that way. I checked the Fayetteville newspapers and it was reported as an
accident on holiday. No mention of driving a car so no suspicions were aroused. They were
cremated within days and according to the obituary, very few people attended. They obviously kept
themselves to themselves and their son meanwhile is getting himself a tan in Bangkok or wherever.
What do you think Bryant?’

‘Hm. I think someone didn’t want Arnold to have any ties when he got back from wherever.’
