ANNE’S OFFICE
MI6 BUILDING
THE EMBANKMENT LONDON
TH
FRIDAY MARCH 6 1998
Anne now had three forwarded signals from GCHQ and a pattern was beginning to emerge. The
interceptor had traced the caller to Boston Massachusetts and even pinpointed to an area but the
caller was no fool and never stayed on long enough for a complete trace. The fact that someone in
Cheltenham had managed to trace this far suggested that an interceptor was anticipating the calls
to try and stretch the time available for tracing but Anne was pretty certain that whoever was
making these calls knew exactly how long a full trace would take.
The blackmailer claimed to have a memo that proved British Intelligence was involved in covert
operations in Guatemala. He also claimed the operation was being funded externally. He demanded
half a million dollars for the original memo.
There was also a company name mentioned “London Property Invest” which Anne could find no
trace of. The use of a safe direct phone line and an untraceable company name suggested someone
was running something outside of the office. There was nothing unusual in that, it was in fact
common practice with controllers and handlers to remove everything as far as possible from home
base; it was the depositing of money that was abnormal. It suggested someone in Boston knew
large sums of money, probably American money, were being deposited into a MI6 cover company.
The time was right to get some help on the ground.
She took the list of Assists that Barker had given her and looked for the nearest to Boston.
Mick Hagley in New York ticked the boxes. She smiled to herself, how many would succeed with a
job application that included petty larceny, pick pocketing, GBH and breaking and entering on their
C.V.?
Anne settled down to write a signal including her session code and answer phone number. When it
was finished, she called his New York messaging service and tapped out on the dial pad a long list of
five digit numbers.
Anne’s office was really an annexe to Fred’s larger room with a connecting door, which they never
closed. As she put the phone down, she noticed Fred framed in the doorway.
‘Hi Fred, how long have you been there?’
‘Anne, I don’t like interfering but what is going on. You have a new phone line and now you are
using it to transmit code and to whom?’
‘I’m sorry Fred. I can’t tell you and before you say anything else I am working directly for the top
floor.’
