‘He is an investment expert in Boston Massachusetts.’
‘Aha. And where is his office?’
‘I don’t know.’
‘You don’t know. Did you never ask?’
‘No. Why should I need to know the whereabouts of his office? Perhaps he works from home.’
‘What about his home. Does he live in Boston?’
‘No he lives in Burlington.’
‘What’s the address?’
‘I don’t know that either, I have never been there.’
Gabriela started to look uncomfortable.
It would have been easy to take my foot off the throttle; a beautiful young girl was starting to get
embarrassed about her association with a rich man who she was going to marry within such a short
time of meeting him. The only conclusion one could make was that she was a fortune hunter but it
was still worth pressing.
‘Tell me about how you met him. What game was it?’
‘We had adjacent seats and he offered to buy me popcorn and a soda. We started talking and he
bought me dinner that evening. We just took it from there as they say.’
‘And the game?’
‘What do you mean?’
‘I mean who the Patriots were playing.’
‘I am so sorry, I really cannot remember.’
I sat and thought about that answer. If this girl was a football fan as she professed then she would
remember, if not details about the game, at the very least whom they were playing.
‘’How and when did Arnold disappear?’ I continued and noted some relief in her face at not being
pursued about the game.
‘Arnold arrived two weeks ago; he stayed with me in my rented flat in Notting Hill. One day I came
home and he was gone, his clothes everything.’
‘Did he leave a note?’
‘No Nothing.’
