Intended to provide privacy for key personnel and that is exactly what they do. I believe we should
keep this to ourselves and wait for the next call, that is if GCHQ intercept it.’

‘The next question is why the signal came directly to you?’

‘I have no idea. I know people at Oakley of course but they would not skip across protocol channels.
I can only guess that the reconstruction of your department and my transfer to it is not the closely
            guarded secret we thought.’

‘Have you told anybody about this?’

            ‘No.’

            ‘Fred?’

            ‘No.’

            ‘Bryant?’

            ‘No.’

‘Does Bryant know about your new position?’

            ‘No.’

‘OK keep it that way. Just wait here.’

With relief, she found her decision to take the intercept directly to Barker, justified.

Barker rose and left the office. Anne waited as instructed and after half an hour Barker’s secretary
            came in with a coffee.

‘That’s very kind of you.’ said Anne and continued ‘do you think he will be long?’

‘Well it’s not always easy getting in to see the Chief.’ She replied conspiratorially.

Another half an hour passed until Barker reappeared briskly.

‘Right Anne, this is what we are going to do. With immediate effect you are upgraded as, naturally,
is also your security clearance.’ He spoke into his intercom, ‘Jane, bring me in the list of all our
America Assist operatives.’ He turned back to face Anne.

‘You are being assigned Project Black Operations Supervisor. Drop everything else.’
Jane entered and passed him a couple of typescript pages.

‘Project Black is top priority. Access is just you and me. Your security clearance now gives you
priority call on any assistance you need. This is a list of people based in America you can call on for
help when you need it,’ he passed Anne the typescript pages. ‘They can help with anything,
surveillance, breaking and entering, bodily harm, anything, literally anything.’
